BRiCS

Philosophy

BRiCS stands for "Build Robots Create Science". The missing "i" represents the spirit of innovation, imagination and interactivity that are so conspicuously missing in the educational process in India today.

BRiCS was born out of the philosophy that we learn better by doing things. This spirit of Constructivism forms the central theme around which the activities of BRiCS have evolved. Over the years, we have been struck by the strong interest exhibited by youngsters in robotics activity at the Center for Robotics.

The five key notions of BRiCS are:

  • Fun:Anything the child does, first and foremost, must be fun.
  • Hands-On activities to engage whole body and mind.
  • Student-centered pedagogy - student owns the idea behind the learning process.
  • Learning, not Teaching: learning occurs best at the peer-to-peer level; teachers as facilitators and guides.
  • Storytelling as an engaging peer-to-peer presentation device.

Much of the ideas here are in sync with notions of constructivism, which holds that learners must construct their own notions of the concept to be learned. To a limited extent, the teacher's explanations help, but in the end, the child must experience her own learning in her own individual way.

Why are we doing this?

At the end of the day, it is the students from whom BRiCS derives its energy and impetus. It is their energy that washes off on us; it is the smile on their faces that makes us smile. Once the model is finished and its story is told, it becomes part of our larger story, and this is what really fuels the innovations behind BRiCS.
